Latitude/Longitude is the moniker under which Brooklyn-based musicians Patrick McCarthy and Michael Garofalo perform. They've been known to tinker with toy pianos, bang on household items, make electronics squeal and squelch, scare the cats, even surprise you with a folksy harmony now and again.

Mostly, though, they strum guitars.

Watching Latitude/Longitude perform has been likened to watching the Dawn of Man sequence from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The duo overheard someone make this comparison after one of their first shows. At the time, Patrick and Michael were puzzled. Was the comparison favorable? Or was it a thinly veiled insult? Did it suggest that the duo had stumbled upon some revolutionary use of the detritus strewn about the stage? That they had become masters of the technology at hand? That their music somehow signaled an irreparable spilt with the past? Or was it simply that they reminded the audience member of monkeys?

Patrick and Michael finally decided that whatever it meant, it sounded good.

The Toughs

Then they decided to make a record. Latitude/Longitude's self-titled debut blends the spontaneity of the group's often-improvised live sets with formally composed songs. Several tracks feature collaborations with Laura Harrison (clarinet), Orion Rigel Dommisse (vocals), and Mikey Jones (electronics and objects).

The album is out now on L/L's own label, Early Thieves. The first 100 copies sport hand-made sleeves, which you can see here. Listen to MP3's from the album on the Music page. To buy the record, visit Other Music in NYC or order your copy from SquidCo.
